YSTV40:Rowan04

YSTV40:Rowan04 Hmm... Sounds like some kind of sports score. What I actually mean is that YSTV is now in its fortieth year, just as I finish my fourth year at YSTV.

Saturday night was the culmination of a lot of hard work - the YSTV40 "birthday party".

When I Was 22...

...it was a very good year. No, it actually was. Well OK, is.

It all started pretty well with my best set of uni results ever, an awesome week's holiday with friends and a great summer. 2 weeks sailing in Turkey was one of the best holidays ever, and then my 4th year at uni has been pretty OK too. But most of all, my big news...

For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of seeing or speaking to me in the last week, I have a job! Woo!

Os Montes Estão Vivos…

Tuesday saw me heading to the rather swanky Media Centre at BBC White City for another interview. This one was for a Trainee Technologist job in Future Media and Technology, which is all a swanky way of saying Research and Development. I was pretty nervous about this one, partly because I'd really like the job, and partly because it was all a bit complex and daunting. As well as an (hour-long) interview, I had to give a presentation on my favourite invention and do a "group exercise", the latter being particularly mysterious as they wouldn't tell us what that meant until the day.

Custard and Canal Boats

Well I promised more news soon, and it's been a while, so here goes. I apologise, by the way, for the custard theme which seems to be emerging in this blog. It's worrying me slightly...

Well it's been a big few weeks. YSTV's annual student union elections coverage rocked and was a huge amount of fun, though very tiring. Job hunting has continued, and I got asked for another interview. More on that story later...

Lemsip and Datime Telly

The Easter holidays sees the National Student TV Association (NaSTA) conference and awards, which means YSTV has been preparing our awards entries. For the 4th year in a row I was on the team editing our Best Broadcaster entry, a 10 minute showreel of the station's work over the last year. One weekend, many cans of Red Bull and 45 hours work later, and it was completed. We were pretty pleased with it. More oddly, I was nominated as YSTV's "Best On-Screen Male" entry to the awards, which meant more editing fun for another 5-minute showreel.

Beyond YSTV, life has been getting exciting in the job arena too - I've been filling in more applications and even have an interview - don't want to tempt fate by saying too much, but I'm very scared and excited.

Not a very exciting or witty post I'm afraid - I'm not feeling so great so I'm sitting here nursing a Lemsip, watching ABC1 and struggling to think of a witty title for this post. It may just not happen. More news soon...maybe.

One down…

Well, I've taken the plunge and applied for my first "real" job. Something proper, for when I leave uni. Distressingly, it's rather a good job, and I really really want it! So a few hours of typing and 7 crazy questions later, I have submitted my application to be a Trainee Technologist at BBC Future Media and Technology in Kingswood Warren. It's well paid for a graduate job, especially one in media - I could possibly get more in an electronics firm, but that's not really what I want to do... my passion is technology in media. (the clue is in my degree title!) The location is fantastic - fairly close to both my friends in London and those in Sussex, but far enough from central London that I might even be able to afford to live! The job itself sounds very interesting and varied, with the 2 years spent doing allsorts with the most prestigious media R&D group in the world. Check out more at their website. I'm guessing application numbers will be high, so my chances may not be that great, but here's hoping...
