2008: A Year In Pictures
As a year draws to a close, its always tempting to look back over the last 12 months and consider how they've been. 2008 has been an eventful and enjoyable year for me, and I'd like to share a few snapshots of what my year has been like. These aren't necessarily the best photos I've taken, or even the most important events of the year, but they're a set of windows into the last few months which I hope you'll enjoy.
I started the year working on novel interaction methods between humans (specifically TV presenters, since I work for the BBC) and computer graphics. I was essentially using camera-based tracking technology as a means of producing a large touch screen without actually using a touch-based interface.
In February, I went off to Wood Norton, the BBC's training and development facility near Evesham. I undertook a 7 week training course on Broadcast Engineering, along with the rest of BBC R&I's trainees plus some staff from Siemens, Red Bee and BBC Nations and Regions.
On returning to London, I was staring out of our kitchen window one evening, being blown away by the view of the sunset over London. I decided to have a go with high dynamic range images and produced some photos of the scene. This one is one of my favourites.
Every year around Easter, the National Student Television Association (NaSTA) holds a conference and awards ceremony. After talking to various people at work, we decided it would be a good place to promote our recruitment, and my colleague Jigna and I attended to show off what the BBC does in the technology space to a bunch of hung over students.
The summer was a fantastic time to be working in BBC Kingswood Warren. The sun makes the stately home a very pleasant place to be, and walks through the garden and around the croquet lawn(!) are an enjoyable way to take a quick lunchtime break. Sadly, the place has been sold, and we'll be vacating it soon.
June was an incredibly enjoyable month for me, as I went to 3 amazing gigs. The first was John Mayer in The Hague, which was the centrepiece of a fantastic weekend away in Amsterdam. Shortly after that I saw Bon Jovi at Twickenham stadium and Jason Mraz in Cambridge.
September saw me join my parents for a week's sailing off the north coast of Sicily. A particular highlight was Stromboli, one of Italy's 3 active volcanoes, and unusual in being almost constantly active. I love how it looks exactly like the pictures that small children draw when they learn about volcanoes - the shape is almost a perfect cone, and the cloud of steam and smoke eminating from the crater could be out of a cartoon.
However the holiday didn't all go completely smoothly. We had a night of unexpected appauling weather, and the rather unimpressive fittings on the boat took a beating. My dad was injured, leaving me looking after the boat (complete with snapping ropes) as my parents went to the local hospital. Thankfully, everyone was OK.
After the holiday, I started a new project at work looking at multichannel audio for BBC HD. For this I'm based in White City in west London, and whilst rather different from Kingswood, I feel there is a certain beauty to a sunset here too.
What we haven't had at White City is any snow. However just a few miles away in Kingswood, they had some autumnul flutters, and I was luck enough to be on that site for a meeting one snowy morning.
One other very enjoyable part of my year has been watching my nephew Sebastian grow, and celebrate his first birthday. So 2008 was a good year, even if a little hairy at times. Work has been great, as have my social and family lives. Here's hoping 2009 is as good for me, and for you.
